A Few Questions

[edit]
  1. I have a photo of a building (the Titanic Museum, Belfast) that I don't know if I am allowed to upload.
  2. I have photos of unidentified flowers, what should I upload them as? (or should I even upload them?)

Thanks, WalnutBloom (talk) 12:10, 10 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@WalnutBloom: Hi, and welcome. 1) Yes, per COM:FOP Ireland. 2) See en:WP:BOTANY.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:24, 10 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't see anything obviously helpful at en:WP:BOTANY. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:37, 10 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Per Category:Unidentified plants, at least people do upload pics of unidentified plants. Perhaps some get deleted per COM:SCOPE, but that's me speculating. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:35, 10 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Welcome! I’m new here as well but I think it’s worth uploading the unidentified flowers. Write as much as you know about them (where it was taken, even the time of year if you know it). Ideally someone with botanical knowledge will come along and identify them. Good luck! Stampdragon (talk) 16:05, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Cleaning up descriptions?

[edit]

Does a page with a description section like this need cleaning up? (File:St. Nicholas (serial) (1873) (14597542849).jpg) Do you keep the text that appeared after the image, which is sometimes nonsensensical? Any tips on these kind of pages is appreciated! Stampdragon (talk) 14:45, 17 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Stampdragon: Hi, and welcome. That is how it appears on Flickr; you can leave it well enough alone. Also, you did not need to categorize this page.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:21, 17 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Jeff G.: you did not need to categorize this page: Stampdragon just removed the cat check template, presumably because they (correctly, I think) considered the page to be already sufficiently categorized. - Jmabel ! talk 20:56, 17 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I want to upload a Picture of Vuttikorn Inthraphuvasak for his Wikipedia page

Only thing is, the picture i am planning on using isn't mine, rather from this website: https://51gt3.com/en/racer/vutthikorn-inthraphuvasak

How could this work since I would like to upload it to his wikipedia page :]

You can't. Neither Commons nor Wikipedia allows fair-use pictures of living people. If you want, you can try to contact him and point him to Wikipedia:A picture of you, maybe he likes the idea. More guidance at COM:THIRD. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:55, 18 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@F1fan00: in general, if you have any plans to upload third-party photographs, I strongly recommend reading COM:THIRD. Except for things that are so old they are clearly in the public domain (e.g. 18th-century prints) or where there is already an explicit free license available, this is one of the most difficult Commons tasks to do correctly. - Jmabel ! talk 02:42, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Actor in costume

[edit]

Hello! I uploaded this picture recently of an actress in costume, taken during the 'bows' after a play. I received a question on my talk page on en-wiki about removing the picture, as the costumes are original to the play. Can anyone advise on how this intersects with COM:COSTUME? The character the actor was playing is clearly in the public domain, but I'm not certain how that impacts the costumes. Thanks. Ganesha811 (talk) 19:50, 18 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

That seems like a custom design for that specific play. I suspect a costume designer put considerable creative thought into the look and feel of this design for this particular character and the role the character plays, as well as how the costume is perceived by the audience. I'd thus assume it to be copyright protected as a (or part of a) creative work. It's also a considerable part of the image (so not de-minimis or anything) and probably not in a public space etc.. I wouldn't want to step into a court trying to convince the judge of this being copyright free. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 22:55, 18 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Disagree. I'm not aware of any precedent for this interpretation of U.S. copyright law for a costume that is essentially normal human clothing. If it were, almost the entire history of photography of theater would be in trouble. (The same would be the case for many concert performances, most parades, etc.) France has something like this level of protection for clothing; I believe the U.S. does not.
@Ganesha811: I suggest you take this to COM:Village pump/Copyright where you will probably get a more informed opinion than from either User:TheDJ or myself. (I presume that TheDJ is, like myself, reasonably knowledgeable about copyright, but not a copyright lawyer or anything close to on. I would hope neither of us would "step into a court trying to convince a judge" of anything. In the unlikely event that TheDJ is actually a lawyer, my apologies, and if that is true then you should take his advice.) - Jmabel ! talk 03:00, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you both for your replies. I'll ask at that forum for help as well. Ganesha811 (talk) 03:10, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Some categories show blue triangles and can expand. Why?

[edit]

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Cossey_Arboretum Three entries have expandable blue triangle icons. Most do not. I cannot figure out why they are different. Cossey25 (talk) 20:46, 18 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

How do I change 133? Cossey25 (talk) 00:41, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Actually, "Tree 132" and "Tree 133" do not have those categories, those are the parent categories of "Tree 132" and "Tree 133".
  • The "blue triangle" only appears if a category has subcategories. In this case, "Tree 132" has no subcategories, so a "gray triangle" is displayed next to it. "Tree 133" has 1 subcategory, which is Category:Cossey Section 001, so a "blue triangle" is displayed next to it.
  • By the way, seeing Category:Cossey Section 001, it seems perhaps you misunderstood how categories work. When you add categories to a category, you are adding the parent categories that the category belongs, not the subcategories that belong to that category. See Commons:Categories for more details.
  • This means the subcategories of Category:Cossey Section 001 cannot be its parent categories at the same time. So, the category needs to be fixed.
Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 02:19, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I was misunderstanding categories. Thanks! Cossey25 (talk) 04:43, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

In‐scope loophole

[edit]

Say on another Wikimedia wiki we have 2 freely licenced files, A & B. A’s only transclusion is in B. B’s only transclusion is in A. Per COM:INUSE, they should be moved to Commons, as they are transcluded in a page that isn’t a user page, a talk page, an inactive sandbox or draft, an automatically generated project, an explicitly non‐in‐scope project, or a project only edited by the creator. Couldn’t a bad actor abuse this to get any file they want onto Commons? It's not exactly a loophole, it's the reason we exist. Can this be used in bad faith? Yes. Is this used in bad faith sometimes? Yes. Do they tend to last that long? Not really. If the file is under fair use, then it should stay on the local project. Copyright will always overrule SCOPE. (also, if it's only used in a draft that's about to get deleted for advertising or vandalism, it will get deleted here too. All the Best -- Chuck Talk 21:25, 18 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Alachuckthebuck: I was more so talking about a person abusing this method to upload freely licensed personal files, as obviously copyrighted media is still copyrighted.

@Alachuckthebuck: There is also 1 template saying it’s under a free licence, which means it can be kept (see COM:Multi-licensing). But my question still stands though; Couldn’t a bad actor transclude a freely licensed personal photo in a freely licensed personal photo to get it onto Commons?

I think a more reasonable set of questions would be: Why, if you are not trying to be disruptive:
  1. are you posting as User:Anohthterwikipedian when that account was renamed in March to User:Star walker?
  2. are you using as an example an image uploaded by your account, without revealing that it is yours?
  3. have you uploaded what purports to be an April 2026 image with a v1.0 CC licence which has been deprecated for new uses for over two decades?
  4. Have you tagged the image with being under multiple, redundant licences?
-- Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:10, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Pigsonthewing:
  1. I forgot to change my signature due to laziness. I’ve changed it now.
  2. It was only meant to be an example of a file being transcluded in another file (for non‐disruptive reasons), not of someone abusing this to get it onto Commons.
  3. Just because it’s been deprecated doesn’t mean it can’t have new uses, and for personal reasons I can’t disclose why I licensed it that way.
  4. I multi‐licensed the work so it can be used in non‐commercial settings.

"personal reasons I can’t disclose why I licensed it that way" won't wash.
I didn't ask why you multi‐licensed the work; I asked why you did so with redundant licences. In any case the first, open, licence allows its use in non‐commercial settings. You have been here long enough to know this.
You have now amended the name in your sig; but made it pale yellow on white, which makes it unreadable for many. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:15, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Pigsonthewing: I thought that Sharealike was a viral licence, meaning that a file licensed with it could not be used in non‐commercial settings?
Star
Walker 21:00, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Pigsonthewing: And as to why I licensed it under the CC-SA-1.0 licence, it’s because I don’t want nor need attribution for my work, but I do want any further derivatives of it be equally free. Because CC-BY-SA requires attribution and CC-0 allows non-free derivatives, the only licence that works is CC-SA-1.0.
Star
Walker 10:28, 24 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I’ve just realised that by moving both files here, the files would no longer be hosted on their original wiki, meaning we can technically delete them as out of scope after uploading them. Basically, the loophole is counteracted by another loophole. ANOTHERWlKlPEDlAN wɑit thɑt’s ɑ typo 09:38, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Appropriate/High Quality photos

[edit]

Hello, I'm a new user and I have some photos of various creatures I found tidepooling in southern California I'd like to upload. What constitutes a high quality photo, or one that is worth uploading at all? I have some pretty clear photos of birds and snails, but I also have a photo of a brittle sea star being held in hand which is clear but maybe the hand is distracting? I also have various photos of the sea which I assume aren't worthy.

Additionally, I have identified the birds and sea star but not the snail. Does that change anything? Benjaminaventi (talk) 16:04, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Err on the side of inclusion, but ask yourself if the pictures show us anything new - maybe the first pic of a species, or the first in a particular country or region. Or a plumage variation or unusual behaviour. Maybe the hand-held pic shows a feature that a "wild" photo does not?
For the unidentified, there are Category:Unidentified animals and its subcategories.
You can also usefully post to COM:iNaturalist. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:06, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Benjaminaventi: roughly how many photos (that are potentially useful to Commons) are you talking about? - Jmabel ! talk 21:53, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Only around 3-5 maybe? why? Benjaminaventi (talk) 01:19, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Benjaminaventi: We have a help page, Commons:Image guidelines, there's a section about general quality criteria (Commons:Image guidelines#Quality and featured photographic images). While that section is geared towards images whose photographers plan a candidacy for quality assessments, the advices about lighting, sharpness, composition, editing and blur are generally valid for every media. On the other side, as Andy said, it's usual to "Err on the side of inclusion", as long as your images aren't not totally lacking in sharpness, so that nobody has a chance to discern the depicted motif. BTW, 3-5 images is the amount that gets uploaded every 10 seconds or less at any time of day, so you may upload anyway, the data amount is virtually negligible in regard to curating and quality assurance tasks. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 02:06, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes. I was expecting to hear a number more like "80" or "250". For a handful of images, don't sweat it. As long as they are free-licensed and more-or-less in scope, there is no real downside. - Jmabel ! talk 14:18, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
haha yeah I figured I'd only upload the best ones anyways. Good to know, thanks! Benjaminaventi (talk) 16:14, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I am a brand marketing leader at Life is Good and we want to upload our company logo since we've rebranded. How can I go about doing this? Rachaelangelina (talk) 19:10, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Rachaelangelina: I'm assuming this is the clothing retailer and that the logo is the one at upper left here. I'm also assuming that you are mostly concerned with having it on the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki). If either of those assumptions is wrong, let me know, because it could affect the answer.
That logo is complex enough that it presumably has copyright protection 'as well as trademark, so the only way we could host it on Commons is if the company were willing to free-license the logo (which, honestly, I wouldn't recommend). If you did that, you could upload it to Commons with the appropriate license plus {{Trademarked}}, indicating that someone else could use the image freely (in the cases of most licenses, with attribution) but not in a way that would create any confusion with your brand.
More likely, you'd want to leave Commons out entirely, not grant a license, and use it on en-wiki under their allowance for using non-free logos. en:Template:Logo rationale is probably self-explanatory; if not, then en:Wikipedia:Non-free content will probably help you out; failing that, ask further questions on en-wiki, not Commons.
en-wiki is much tighter than Commons about the potential conflicts of interest involved in people editing as a company employee. Before you make any edits there, I strongly advise you to read en:WP:COI (on conflicts of interest) and en:WP:PAID (on paid editing). Among other things, these describe required disclosures, and if you edit there without disclosing first, you are in serious danger of having your account blocked on that wiki.
I hope that all helps. And I'm sorry this is a little difficult. - Jmabel ! talk 22:10, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Weird incorrect spellings in image? Multiple versions

[edit]

This question involves three files:

These files depict the city-states & regions of Ancient Greece. The problem is that the 2013 file spells at least two completely wrong. "Tessaly" should be "Thessaly". I think what has happened is that the 2011 Russian file has been translated into the 2013 English file.

Is there any way to correct the 2013 image? I don't understand how these issues could have been introduced. JordyGrey (talk) 22:17, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Can I upload this map?

[edit]

I'm new to Wikipedia/Wikimedia in general so I have a question about a specific image. It's a map of protected areas that part of the UN puts out in periodic updates. The map ("Map of protected areas and OECMs") is included in their latest update along with a citation and download link - https://www.protectedplanet.net/en/monthly-release-news/may-2026-update-of-the-wdpca-and-gd-pame. Can I upload the image/map and include it on the 30 by 30 page (the focus of the update)? It seems like they want people to use the map, but when I search Google it doesn't show up as having a Creative Commons license. Advice? Naturedata (talk) 03:15, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

The data provider allows only non-commercial usage, see https://www.protectedplanet.net/en/legal . Those legal mentions make it utterly clear that the graphic is not to be uploaded to Commons. You may use instead a classic link as reference, for instance. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 03:30, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@I Amit Dhanda: You almost certainly should not do this unless you are either a significantly active participant in Wikimedia projects (clearly you are not) or either you or the photographer have at least a near-encyclopedic level of notability (you know better than I do whether that applies) and can document that notability from independent third-party sources. It will simply be deleted as an unused personal picture. License of pictures to be uploaded

[edit]

Hello! I'm making an article about an artist, a living person. I have an oral permission from a photographer, who took pictures of the artist, for placing the pictures into the article. The pictures are on the photographer's X account in public access, but not noted as "public domain" or "CC0 1.0 Universal" etc. Is it enough, if the photographer makes a comment to the post with the picture, noting the "public domain" or "CC0 1.0 Universal" etc information? Or must the post with the picture be edited with the new license information? Or any other way? Mirenathecat (talk) 13:25, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yikes…CropTool mistake?

[edit]

I just discovered CropTool and used it to crop an image from a magazine. File:Easter Morning - Harriet Repplier, 1909.jpeg The categories were automatically added to include the ones used for the whole magazine, which clearly don’t apply to this one image. Can someone explain what I did wrong? Thanks so much! Stampdragon (talk) 14:23, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Stampdragon: You did nothing wrong. It can't guess what to write about an image. Edit the new page yourself. - Jmabel ! talk 14:36, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Stampdragon, no, CropTool duplicated them on the new file. You can safely edit the new file page.

A 20 May 2026 website update caused the "switch file" buttons to dissapear

[edit]

So I'm kinda autoconfirmed on Wiki Commons, but haven't published any pictures yet, and I'm South American, so I will try to keep it consistent while uploading. I like navigating through random images, but at some point, the directional buttons that are used to switch between files are gone. Why? - SimpleObjects-9ei (talk) 00:23, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@SimpleObjects-9ei: I've been on the site for 2 decades, but I'm not sure what you mean by "directional buttons that are used to switch between files", unless you are talking about the "slideshow" (which appears to be working as it should). I'm not aware of any "directional buttons" related to Special:Random/File. Can you give some more context here? - Jmabel ! talk 02:15, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
No idea what caused it, but this sounds like a glitch I was experiencing in Media Viewer for the past week or so (here on category pages and in enWP articles): no previous- & next-image arrows or ##/## counter shown. I found a sort of workaround: going into full-screen mode would make them appear, allowing navigation from then on in the session (even after exiting full-screen), but the counter did not refresh. Anyway, it cleared up for me just a day or two ago.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:57, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

uploading a picture question

[edit]

Hi! My name is Molly Burnett, and I am trying to change my wikipedia picture. (my user name is my dog Eloise, but I promise - it's me lol) My current wiki picture is about 17 years old, and because I'm an actress - its so helpful to have a current photo up. Plus the picture thats currently up is, well.... lets just call it what it is - its rough. The new picture I am trying to upload however is one that I took - so I own the rights to everything! I uploaded it (I think) I've never edited a wikipedia page before. Can someone help me? Did I do it correctly? PLEASE HELP LOL Eloisevictoriaj (talk) 02:20, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Eloisevictoriaj Welcome! I see you uploaded File:Molly Burnett.jpg. I also see the same picture at https://www.instagram.com/mollyburnett/p/DVt004YEv7u/.
The basic assumption on this website is that copyright belongs to the photographer, which is not obviously you, though you might have used a tripod or something, I can't know that. What is needed is the photographer putting a license Commons can use on it. If that's you, you can do it like this: File:Instagram licencing permission example.jpg. If not, you can point the photographer to COM:VRT/CONSENT.

How to clear Wikipedia edit summary history?

[edit]

Hello, when I add an image to a page on Wikipedia, that is, when I make an edit and click the Publish button, it asks me to enter an edit summary, which I do. However, previously written edit summaries appear again in this field. How can I delete these old summaries? These are not stored in browser cookies. EDCrasher (talk) 15:18, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@EDCrasher that's your browser remembering that, and it depends on which browser. But generally when you reset the cookies for the website, it will also throw away that memory. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 11:09, 23 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I reset the cookies, and I even tried a different browser, but it still didn’t get deleted. EDCrasher (talk) 11:13, 23 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
In at least some browsers, you can press the down arrow ↓ or alt+down arrow button in the edit summary field to select the first saved edit summary, then press shift+delete to delete one saved edit description, then either repeat pressing shift+delete until you delete them all, or selectively pick which saved edit description you want to keep or delete.
In Firefox, you can either press ctrl+shift+del, or go into Settings → Privacy & Security → Browser Privacy → History and press the Clear History button, then select only Saved form info, to delete saved form entries. However, this is not selective to a particular website, such as Wikipedia, but applies to all websites, so it might not be what you want.
b_jonas 08:23, 27 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Dear @B jonas,
This information is not stored in the browser; it is stored in my account. Likewise, when I log in from my phone, the summaries I previously wrote also appear there. EDCrasher (talk) 08:32, 27 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Is this image suitable to be uploaded to Wikipedia?

[edit]

I'm trying to upload an image of Look Mum No Computer for the UK's Eurovision page, however I'm unsure if the image I have falls under the usage criteria or not. Does it fall under the usage? Image link is https://photos.ebu.ch/media/image?src=thumbs/38855_1250_m.jpg&1779381955 for reference. Cheers and thanks. Joeball 7 (talk) 16:50, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello Joeball 7, for uploading, you've got to differentiate between the projects. This one here is Wikimedia Commons, whose upload policies are chiefly regulated by COM:Licensing, COM:SCOPE and COM:Fair use. These rules are incompatible to the EBU media use terms from https://photos.ebu.ch/en/terms - in short, you can't upload that artist image here.
You can give en:WP:FAIR a read, but I'd say that, as it is a reasonable assumption that a free alternative illustration of that artist can be produced (lots of ESC participants actually have freely licensed images), there's no chance of being able to justify that upload on the English Wikipedia.
So, to summarise: the media pool of the EBU is off-limits for Wikimedia's projects and any upload taken from there amounts to a (forbidden and unwanted) copyright violation. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 17:43, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Multilingual galleries

[edit]

Hello, I am looking for the best way to create multilingual galleries where all images have multiple descriptions and visitors can choose their preferred language. The language select feature would provide an easy solution for it, but I could not find the right template to create the file descriptions inside the galleries. The goal would be that 1) only one language is visible and 2) the language name is not indicated before the content. I tried the {{Multilingual description}} template, but this one displays in front of each text the language name. I tried the {{LangSwitch}} template, but this one does not work with the language select feature, but fixed to the selected surface language of the user. Do I really need to use the Translate extension for this purpose? Thank you for your advice! Samat (talk) 20:43, 23 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Crazy captcha

[edit]

Before I was able to submit an entry just now, I was presented a weird kind of captcha with twelve blurry images and the task to check some of them for certain criteria. Some of the images I could hardly tell what they were supposed to depict, but the worst was the task. Since I am writing from Germany, I was given the task in German. I am a native German speaker with a university degree, so I do believe I speak a bit of German. The task was this:

"Wählen Sie alle Gegenstände aus, die zum Abprallen von Oberflächen gedacht sind."

What on earth is this sentence supposed to mean? Who produces this kind of sentence? And even if I come up with a faint idea of what it might be meant to say, how am I supposed to solve this captcha if I can't even tell what half the images are supposed to depict?

Most captchas have a button to open a new one if the current one doesn't work. Yes, there was such a button. And the same captcha kept coming up again and again.

BTW, has anyone given a thought to accessibility around here? I did not see the choice of an audio captcha. If I can hardly do it, how are visually impaired people supposed to solve such a ridiculous puzzle? --~2026-27914-20 (talk) 20:59, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@2026-27914-20: That's pretty awful. I assume you made it through, since you are writing here. I'm guessing they wanted you to select things like rubber balls or such.
Usually if you fail one Captcha it just gives you another. Did that not happen?
Also: there is not much we can do for you about this on the Help desk. Maybe COM:Village pump/Technical, but I'd make a strong guess that this is entirely outside of Commons purview and is a Wikimedia Foundation-level issue. - Jmabel ! talk 21:16, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Comment, regarding the accessibility issue, according to mw:Product Safety and Integrity/Anti-abuse signals/hCaptcha#How hCaptcha works, it appears there is a text-based challenge for users with accessibility needs. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 21:29, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
~2026-27914-20, Wählen Sie alle Gegenstände aus, die zum Abprallen von Oberflächen gedacht sind."
Select all the objects that are designed to bounce off of surfaces. My German is poor and I needed to look up some words, but I do understand it. There were presumably images of things like category:bouncy balls, category:space hoppers and w:Flex-Foot Cheetahs. Maybe category:tennis balls and category:clappers.
I just tried to register an account in an incognito tab, but I wasn't presented any captcha. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 22:49, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Alexis Jazz: Now that you give me the English, it makes sense immediately. Which means to say: The German sentence is probably an unidiomatic literal translation from English that doesn't make much sense in German.
@Jmabel: Yes, it did give me another captcha. With exactly the same instructions and the same assortment of images. Yes, I eventually made it through at third try or so, but if you don't really understand what the sentence is trying to say PLUS you can't tell what half the images are supposed to be, it's just really annoying.
@Tvpuppy: Not sure if there was a text-based challenge. I only knew the audio up to now, and looked for that as an alternative. --~2026-27914-20 (talk) 11:56, 26 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

May I upload photos which I have in archive as the legacy after my father? Eduardpetrovsky (talk) 10:09, 26 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Eduardpetrovsky Assuming these pictures aren't so old they are in the public domain, do you mean that your father is the photographer and you inherited them? If so, Commons:Guidelines for heirs licensing inherited works had guidance. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:43, 26 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks. My father was the photographer, the pictures were taken in 1962-63 in Antarctica. He took tens of pictures. I scanned them and inherited after my father passed away. Eduardpetrovsky (talk) 12:54, 26 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Eduardpetrovsky: if you are a single child and no spouse remains that could be a joint heir, then you are normally fully within your rights to do as you please with that inheritance, similar to media that you produced yourself. Follow the hints on the page Gråbergs Gråa Sånglinked above, prepare a scan of a document that demonstrates you as heir (to be eventually sent to COM:VRT, should that need arise). Slight caveat: you said that these photographs were made in Antarctica in the 1960's. Back then, there were barely any tourism or private ventures to travel to the region, most humans sent there were so on orders from official state agencies. It could be that official photographs from governmental expeditions have a copyright that resides not with the actual photographer, but within the agency behind the expedition. Just do a quick check about the circumstances of those shots, please! Historical imagery of Antarctica should be very valuable for us, the projects and research in general and most welcome, especially if the circumstances of the shots (location, date) can be documented! Hello there, i`m trying to change this file "File:Svwaldhof.svg" as it is not the correct crest of the SV Waldhof Mannheim. But i´m new to wikimedia commons and am not allowed to do it. I already uploaded the correct one under the file name "File:SV Waldhof Mannheim Wappen.png". As you may see it is just a small change but still a coorect one. I hope someone can help me solve this problem or just change it themselves. Thanks SV Waldhof Mannheim 07 (talk) 09:13, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hallo @SV Waldhof Mannheim 07:
The US and I don't know the author. Wobs100 (talk) 22:44, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, this may fall under {{PD-US-expired}}, because this photo might be published before January 1st 1931, but if it was never published, it falls under {{PD-US-unpublished}} because it was created before 1906. HyperAnd [talk] 23:00, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
The streetcar itself is seen here but I couldn't find the other one elsewhere. Wobs100 (talk) 23:38, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
The other one was copied by Clowes Studio so it is published? Wobs100 (talk) 23:51, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Images take long time to load

[edit]

Hello, when browsing images on WikiCommons, I have recently noticed images taking take up to 6 seconds to load where as before I used to be able to rapidly cycle through images in a category. I like to look through images but now it is painful. I wonder why this is and if there is something to fix this. Knowledoulos (talk) 00:18, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
